Actually Learning Lanugages

I’ve spent most of my life learning, at the start I didn’t really have any method and I just tried everything.

It all started with my interest in foreign scripts where I started to just learn scripts different to the ones I already knew and then it developed to wanting to learn more than just reading and writing in another script and learning how other languages work.

Throughout the years, I’ve developed a system that works for me (by combining stuff I found online) and I’d like to share it so people would stop using Duolingo and say “I’m learning Spanish”.

I prefer using FOSS apps when possible and so I’m using Anki as my SRS .

I think that for actually advancing in the language you have to use it as much as possible - at the start you wouldn’t really be able to do much and that’s fine but you still have to force yourself to at least consume stuff in that language, and try to find things that actually interest you.

Immersing as much as possible in the language is the key to getting fluency and getting knowledge of the language - you don’t have to drill grammar every day or learn how the cat ate your apple. You just want to gradually learn how the language works - how does it sound, what are the simplest words that are the most prevalent and little by little your brain will get more and more used to the language and with time you’ll even be able to produce it and not just consume it and you’ll be able to write and speak.

Learning grammar is important but there are some grammar points that are much more beneficial to learn and I think you should start with them.
